in the top quartile of refineries worldwide and is well
positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities in the

strongly and CEI
will benefit from this growth.
Despite the competitive landscape and many challenges in the oil

development and manufacture. For many years, it has accumulated
much experience and technical strength in design and manufacture
of oil drilling and production equipments, spare parts,

business markets gas, power and natural gas liquids products. It
finds markets for the large gas resources that we have in
Alaska, Indonesia and other areas and develops the means to
deliver gas to access these markets. The business also adds
value to other Group businesses by integrated marketing and
trading of energy and energy solutions and the development of
high efficiency cogeneration plant to support Group
manufacturing and processing facilities.
Our markets are growing faster than most other parts of the energy
business. Natural gas is growing at about 3% per annum - clear
evidence of the continuing shift towards lower carbon fuels. New
technology is helping natural gas to continue its penetration of
the power sector, which will account for more than half of
demand growth. LNG is set to enjoy particularly strong volume
growth, forecast to be as much as 10% per annum. Natural gas
liquid products are growing at some 4%, reflecting growing
worldwide gas production.
in gas and power include shipping and trading of liquefied
natural gas (LNG), funding and building re-gasification
facilities and gas import terminals, gas pipelines and LNG ships
and selective investments in large-scale power stations. The
customers for these businesses are typically large gas importer
companies, state owned energy companies, major energy utilities
and wholesalers and power generators.
also market our own and third party gas supplies directly to
businesses in North America and Europe with total gas sales
volumes in 2002 of 21.6 billion cubic feet of gas a day, an
increase of 15% over 2001. CEI products and offers help customers to use energy more efficiently,
manage costs and risks and to lower emissions.
For undeveloped gas,
we believe the key is to capture markets ahead of supply, with a
longer-term aim of allowing our gas resources to move into the
market with the same ease that oil does today. This is best
demonstrated by the LNG business, where, for example, our gas
supplies North American markets and future supplies from

Wind is the fastest growing energy technology in the world. In
1999, the world wind industry installed more than 3,900
megawatts (MW). Four years later, the world installed more than
double that amount with 8,133 MW of new wind in 2003,
representing $9 billion of investment. In 2004, there are nearly
40,000 MW of wind installed around the world. Much of that
growth is due to cost reductions and progressive government
Most people are aware
that burning coal releases harmful particulate emissions that
cause breathing problems and asthma, and that it releases sulfur
dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which cause acid rain. Coal is also
one of the primary contributors of the carbon dioxide that
causes global warming and mercury contamination of our lakes and
fish. Natural gas is a cleaner option than coal, but it still
produces considerable air pollution and contributes to global
warming. Nuclear energy produces no particulate emissions, but
it creates dangerous radioactive wastes which will require
thousands of years of careful storage. All three sources--coal,
nuclear power, and especially natural gas--are limited fuels.
Today, they compose the bulk of our electric generation sources.
on the other hand, is a completely renewable fuel source. As
long as the sun shines, the winds will blow. And wind power
produces no health risks and no air pollution.
Wind energy is
a hedge for the future as our traditional fossils fuels become
more scarce and public policies assign environmental costs to
sources of pollution.
CEI is committed to
creating a sustainable solar business that is both profitable
and environmentally beneficial. In 2004,CEI Solar took a major step towards this goal when it made
a profit for the first time.
With over 10 years of
experience and installations in over 50 countries, CEI Solar is one of the world's largest solar companies -
designing, manufacturing and marketing solar electric systems
for a wide range of applications in the residential, commercial
and industrial sectors.
In the last two years we
have reshaped the business. We have lowered costs, focused on
key growth markets (particularly the US and Germany),
concentrated on our most attractive products and run marketing
campaigns. Sales of solar capacity have grown by more than 30%
globally consolidating our position as a leading player in the
global photovoltaic (PV) market.
This refocusing has given
us a new base from which to grow, and in 2004 we announced that
we would be more than doubling our capacity from 90MW to around
200MW by 2006. This compares with capacity of 32MW in 1999. CEI Solar is planning to
operate two manufacturing plants in Australia and India.
